Wonderful stay at Moonshine and Kashmir

We had a wonderful 5 day visit to Kashmir having the most tolerable climate in the Summer in India. We made the Moonshine houseboat our base and we’re glad we did. We are a family of 5. Two adults and 3 kids which gave us the whole boat to ourselves. We were served home cooked meals for breakfast and lunch that was catered to our pallet. Sincere thanks to the cooks and caretakers. The boat was clean and each of the 2 rooms had their own bath. Felt very well taken care off. Only complaint was the barking dogs the 1st night. But was fine the following nights. The view from the balcony was just amazing. Only problem may be the constant solicitors. I suppose everyone needs to hassle to make a living but they should really set a time limit. One shouldn’t miss out on just sitting and enjoying the magnificent view with your family in the early mornings or evenings because you are afraid of tradesmen. But for someone else this could be a pleasant experience having the shops come to your doorstep. I did end up buying stuff! I suppose if there were some rules set on time or guests given the choice to opt in. Not sure how much of this is in the hands of the boat owners though. Would certainly come again!

I traveled to Kashmir six times between 2005 and 2008. During this time period I booked a fly fishing trip through Fayaz Raga, and I stayed on Moonshine Houseboat, which is owned by Sultan Raga. I did not deal exclusively with the Raga family during my visits, but my experiences with them, by far, surpassed my experiences with other outfitters in Kashmir. In general, my experiences in Kashmir, doing business with Kashmiri people have always been great, but the Raga family's genuine care for my enjoyment and for me to have only good experiences make me look back on them with the fondest of memories. These a good people. All they want is for you to appreciate the beauty of their home and their culture and spread the word. Fly fishing with Fayaz Raga at Aru, near Pahalgam, is one of my most beautiful memories. He arranged for my driver, my gear, my licenses, and took me to his favorite fishing spot. This fishing spot was magical. Our tents were pitched in the front yard of a gypsy family's sod roof dugout house, directly on a beautiful spring with emerald colored water. The stream's waist-deep rapids ran continuously in both directions, and we did not run out of spots to hit. We caught 42 emerald trout that were all about 7-12 inches. We brought them back to Srinagar afterwards, and the women cooked great food with them. It was a truly beautiful trip. Fayaz Raga and Manzoor Karnai made sure that I did not have a single thing to worry about. They even entertained me with some campfire singing. Fayaz Raga is a great person to hang out with. As a white woman, it is rare when you can find a male friend in India that will not try to make an advance. Not only did Fayaz not make any advances on me, he made my entire time relaxing and comfortable, because he made sure that no one else did either. He said, "You are my sister, and I will make sure that people treat you as well as they treat my sisters." He is true to his word. He and his father, Sultan, and the other people they work with all made a point to make me feel safe and at ease. This is extremely rare in India. Sultan Raga's houseboat is named "Moonshine." It is on the inner shore (fortress shore) of Lake Nageen. When staying in a houseboat in Srinagar, it is ideal to be on Lake Nageen over Dal Lake. It is a much smaller lake and a more strategic location. There are fewer people on Nageen, and the boats are spaced wider apart. This means you have a better view of the natural beauty. I have stayed on other houseboats in Srinagar, but I am by far fondest of Moonshine. One very special thing about Moonshine is that it has a bathtub. Yes, a bathtub in India. The bathroom is a nice size. It serves as a little haven when you return from a trek or a day out. The boat has gorgeous woodwork. The beds are comfortable. The food is great. They are flexible about cooking. Your wish is their command. They bring you fresh Kashmiri bread and Khawa chai every morning. During my travels in India, my digestive tract was the steadiest while staying on Moonshine. The people, the natural beauty, the quality of life, and the food all make Moonshine a truly purifying environment. By far, I recommend staying here over any place else in Srinagar, Kashmir.
